Mental Health Crisis in the Highlands
In Scotland there is a mental health crisis which affects more and more people each year. Suicide is still a feature of everyday life having catastrophic effects on the victim and on their loved ones.
Unfortunately, Highland has the sad record of having the highest rate of suicide, second only to Orkney and yet the number of beds for mental health patients fell from 66.7 beds per 100,000 population to 64.90 beds. Funding for mental health support has also fallen from 9.12% to 8.53% of NHS budgets and continues to fall.
We are the main mental health charity based in Highland that’s is leading this fight, providing 1 to 1 community support, an innovative Discovery College that provides drop-in centres in Inverness and Wick, a residential 24/7 support unit, the first of its kind in Scotland as well as delivering Care at Home in Caithness and Lochaber.
We help thousands of people suffering from mental ill-health on a journey to mental wellbeing every year. And we don’t just talk the talk. Our Discovery College initiative in Inverness is staffed by a team of peer workers and volunteers who have lived experience and who have all walked the walk.
Every day we need to raise £1500 to continue to provide our innovative and sector leading initiatives, but we know there’s much more to be done and many more people we need to reach.
Partner with us to help in the fight for mental health, and make a real difference. Read on to see how we distribute your kindly donated funds.
Discovery College
A unique initiative in Inverness city centre, offering drop-in face-to-face support without a referral, allowing people suffering from mental ill-health, substance abuse and addiction to talk to someone with lived experience.
Support Services
We have support services throughout the Highlands in Inverness, Lochaber, Easter Ross and Caithness. We provide vital services to people who need care and support in their own home, together with helping those with learning disabilities, and mental ill-health in the community.
Funding helps us to arrange days out to bring people together outside their own homes, often in the most rural communities. In 2025 essential funding of over £50,000 is required to allow us to expand to new premises in Caithness.

Recovery Centre
While we aim to support people in their own homes wherever possible, some people with enduring mental ill-health need a higher level of support, so we offer residential care at our bright and modern Recovery Centre in Inverness
It’s the first centre of its kind in the Scottish Highlands, where we now support 23 people, each within their own bright and airy self-contained flat or bedroom. Donations allow us to do much needed refurbishment, provide days outside the centre, and fund improvements to our green space with plants, vegetables and garden furniture.

Clarity Walk
Our program of wellness walks is designed to help the most isolated and lonely members of our community to get outdoors and socialise with new people. Most of the people who join our walks are elderly and going home to an empty house. We’ve already held over 900 free walks in Inverness and beyond, helping over 8,000 people towards wellbeing both mentally and physically.
