We are delighted to announce that our very own Alanna Oman who is one of our support workers for our Centred Caithness Support Service has been nominated as Carer of the Year.
The award organisers Highland Heroes celebrates the unsung people and organisations who dedicate themselves to helping others; who are there in our hour of need; who contributes to society in a quiet and unselfish way; and who knits our communities together.
After swapping office work to work for a frontline carer role in Wick, Alanna is now in the running for a Highland Heroes award.
Alanna has worked in a wide range of administrative roles in the past, however low confidence stopped her from persuing a role in care earlier in her career.
Alanna now supports people in her community to build independence and get more out of life. Her day-to-day work can involve taking people swimming, helping connect them with their community, together with offering practical support with shopping, finances and hospital appointments.
Alanna commented “I love my job. I wish I’d made the leap sooner. I take pride in noticing when someone is not quite themselves and doing what I can to lift their spirits. It feels like being a really good friend to them.”
Sophie Bramley, Centred Caithness’s Team Manager commented “Alanna is always applying fresh ideas to support sessions and is so creative in her practice, she is an inspiration to others, she supports service users with a person centred approach ensuring that outcomes are achieved in creative ways. Alanna will often offer to work an evening or a weekend to ensure service users feel supported to attend activities they otherwise would not have support to attend.”
