JOB TITLE: Volunteer

LOCATION: The Discovery College, Inverness

COMMITMENT: 1 Full Day or Half Day per week. Flexible hours available.

The Discovery College provides welcoming spaces where people can connect, learn and build confidence as part of their recovery and wellbeing journey.

We are looking for friendly and approachable volunteers to help create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone who comes through our doors.

As a Discovery College Volunteer, you will offer informal peer support through listening, conversation and encouragement. You will help people feel welcome, connect with others and get involved in Discovery College activities.

You may also:

  • Welcome and support people using the Discovery College Lounge.
  • Encourage positive wellbeing conversations and connection with others.
  • Promote Discovery College courses, activities and events.
  • Signpost people to further support where appropriate.
  • Assist with refreshments, learning materials and ensuring the lounge space is a welcoming environment.

Where appropriate, you may draw on your own lived experience to support others. This is not a counselling or clinical role, and you will be supported to maintain appropriate boundaries.

This position is ideal for someone with lived experience who is passionate about supporting others on their recovery and learning journey. As a volunteer at Discovery College, you will:

  • Make a meaningful impact by helping individuals build confidence, life skills, and connections.
  • Develop your own skills in peer support, course facilitation, and mental health recovery.
  • Be part of an inclusive and supportive environment where co-production and lived experience are at the heart of everything we do.
  • Gain valuable experience in education, mental health, and community work, opening pathways for career progression.
  • Work flexibly in a role that fits around your life and commitments.
  • Friendly, empathetic and non-judgemental.
  • Good listeners and comfortable talking to others.
  • Reliable and able to work well within a team.
  • Respectful of confidentiality and individual differences.
  • Willing to learn new skills

Lived experience of mental health challenges, or supporting someone with mental health challenges is welcomed, but not essential.

You will receive training and ongoing support from the Discovery College team, with opportunities to develop your confidence, communication and peer support skills.

You will also have access to free Discovery College courses and can receive a reference following successful volunteering.

Discovery College is built around Connection, Hope, Identity, Meaning and Empowerment (CHIME). By volunteering with us, you can help create a place where people feel welcomed, valued and connected.
