We have launched research about the mental health and wellbeing of highland youth for world mental health day.
The report titled An Exploration into the Factors Impacting on the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Highland Youth Part 1, is launched off the back of the success of our flagship report “Mental Health: Exploring the Current Landscape”, which achieved local and national recognition.
The new piece of research looks at the mental health and wellbeing of young people in Highland, and has identified that over half (56%) of young people asked said they faced significant stress, with reasons including academic performances, finances and their own mental health. Over half (56%) of the young people who have experienced mental health disorders said they were not able to receive help in a timely manner during the pandemic. One of the most shocking discoveries was that 14% of the young people asked said they had no one in their life who would be willing to listen to them, so were left without support for their mental health.
The study also looked at the impact of social media on Highland youth, which showed that 39% of young people have felt uncomfortable or unsafe using social media, with the most common reasons being body shaming or objectification and cyberbullying.
Dr Clare Daly, the Head of Research and Communications said about the research, “We believe in the potential every person we support has to live a fulfilling and meaningful life, through the process of recovery and the restoration to wellbeing. To this end, evidence-based practice and ongoing research is central to our entire approach”.
David Brookfield, Chief Executive commented that “Centred are adapting to change in the mental health landscape, we are initiating our own research into mental health within rural areas to identify ways that service delivery can be adapted to rural challenges. We believe this will us as an organisation ready for the challenges of the future, and will contribute to rural mental health knowledge.”
